We have tried the plain yogurt and it made it worse. The only thing that seemed to help was boiled hamburger and rice. The vets are stumped and just want our $. We've had him only 2 weeks and he's been seen twice for this. I think he may have wheat allergies from the nutro and the I have no clue about the Canidae lamb and rice but nothing seems to be working. Anyone who's been through this please help.

  1. I wish I had a a bulldog.

  2. Thank goodness, I haven't been through it, but I can tell you that loose stools, and especially diarrhea are symptoms of a potentially serious disorder. I'd stay in touch with the vet to keep him apprised of the situation, or consider an opinion from another vet.

  3. English bulldogs are known to be gassy - so the gas may be natural. You said you had him two weeks and he has had Nutro and Canidaein that space of time. The Nutro I would eliminate because of his allergies, but the loose stool may just be from switching him if you did'nt do it gradually - even if you do it gradually - you will sometimes have loose stools until their systems adjust. The hamburger and rice helped because the rice is a binder and will make the stools harder (learned that when puppy I bought once had Parvo/ was supposed to be current on shotsand vet told me that would help his diarrhea and vomiting). I would keep giving him the Canidae for now and he should get used to it and his poops should go to normal.

Another question I have though is - how old is the puppy? Are all his shots/wormings up to date? Worms can cause loose stools. I'm sure this is probably all current and your little guy just has a sensitive stomach. I'd keep giving him the Canidae for now and see if his poops firm up. If they don't - you may want to look for something formulated for sensitive stomachs.

I think it is just going to take him a little time to get used to the Canidae because he probably went from whatever he was eating at the breeder, to Nutro, to Canidae and puppies systems are a lot more sensitive than grown dogs (English Bulldogs are known for sensitive stomachs anyway). I had to do an emergency switch from Nutro (long story) and mine had loose stools for the better part of a week but they are firm now.

    Good Luck with your puppy

Edit: Listen to Dreamer - just said what I did in a shorter version (to wait it out) - lol

  4. 2 foods in 2 weeks will give ANY dog an upset stomach, regardless of which foods or what breed.  Pick one food and stick with it, yes, he is going to have some issues for a few days, just let it run it's course and he'll get past it.  Keep him on the hamburger and rice for about a week and then slowly mix small amounts of dry food into it until he's switched over.  And then WAIT!!!  It can take several weeks or months for a dog to fully adapt to a new food, just be patient.  The more you switch the worse it will be.

I don't like Nutro products, Canidae is good, so is Wellness, Innova EVO, Orijens, Artemis, Chicken Soup, California Natural, Merrick, BG, and more.

  5. short of changing your vet, try prescription Id dogfood mixed with about 2 tablespoons of home cooked boiled chicken breast skinless filets. Prescription i/d dogfood needs an rx from your vet. Also get him checked for worms and special for giardia, of which vet can give meds to clear. If not, may need meds for ibs-irritable bowel sydrome and if so the same food should help. Can use trial and error to subsitute cooked boiled turkey breast. Take paper towels and squeeke out the water from the chicken or turkey,as food should be as dry as possible. Usually must be firm about just regular food, no candy ,ice cream etc.  They will beg, but try for a few days, if not , get a good vet that will work with you. Be vigilent and observe as your infromation helps the vet very much.Good luck, they are good dogs.

  6. try just rice for a bit. my dog can't have even a little bit of meat because he gets the runs right away.

  7. It really does not come down to the manufacturer of the food but the variety.

Instead of lamb and rice for instance try chicken and rice.

My guys always tend to f**t a lot on lamb and rice for example.

    Good luck and God bless.

  8. Try california natural herring and sweet potato.

I reccommend you put him back on the burger and rice and let things get back on track, then slowly introduce the C/N to his diet.

Dont add dairy, many dogs are lactose intolerant, and dairy can make it worse.

You can give a lil bit of pure canned pumpkin too.(not the pie filling as it has spices in it)  It has the right amount of moisture and fiber that it helps with both loose stools and constipation.

  9. well lucky for you you've only had the problem a few weeks. I had the problem of loose stools for MONTHS, vet was tired of seeing me as we could find nothing wrong with any of my pups.  I had tried them on every "premium" dog food out there and nothing helped.  I finally took the suggestion of a breeder friend of mine who said she had a couple of bullies that just could not eat anything but the cheaper brands and that is what I tried. As soon as I switched my pups (and I had 4 of them at the time) over to Pedigree the problem cleared up!

The have no loose stools, coats are gorgeous, no itching, and believe it or not NO GAS ! thank god.. My pups are now 2 yrs old and have had all 6 of my dogs on pedigree, seems to work for me maybe try it for yourself...

  10. Congrats on your new puppy!  I have an english bulldog too.

I've heard plain canned pumpkin helps firm up loose stools.

  11. I have a 2yr old english bulldog and feed him California's Natural lamb and rice. The lamb is especially easy on bullies sensitive stomachs. It will take about a month for him to get used to the food. When he has been sick we have given him rice for a couple days.

  12. First, when switching dog foods, you will want to do it gradually. So, when you got it, you would have had to slowly wean it from its old food.

Second, Canidae, Nutro and many other holistic dog foods can cause runny stools. You will want to make sure your pup is on a large breed puppy formula. That will help with digestion. I recommend Eagle Pack's Large Breed puppy food as it is made in the US and quality is strictly monitored.

I highly recommend this article on dog foods. It is written for Labrador Retrievers but can be applied to any dog breed: http://www.8pawsup.com/articles/health/d...

    Best of luck!
