If you aren't thinking of going back if he says anything just tell him honestly you are sorry you are the cause of any pain but things didn't work out !  Your relationship taught you some important things about yourself and life and he is a part of your life forever.  However you have outgrown each other and it is time to move on.  Tell him he will be fine and you hope someday he can find someone who can love him in a way you can't.  You both deserve that.

If you were the one that dumped him then just tell him that it's over and thats the way it's gonna be. If he's annoying you jus ignore him, he'll get over it. Or if you want him back..then...why not. but jus remember why you broke up in the fist place. good luck.
