My ex husband gained custody of our daughter while I had cancer now he is abusive how can i get her back ??

My ex husband has custody of our daughter becuase he sued me while I was sick an unable to fight back. My daughter has come to me and told me he is abusing her and her step mom. When I talk to him he claimed it was all lies. I found out he was aressted for beating his wife but because she took it back and told the police that she lied they could not put him in jail. We also found out that he is bipolar and having problems with depression. They are telling people that our daughter is lieing and that I am coaching her. We are trying to get a custody evalation but i'm worried that they won't help is there anyone who has been thru this and can give advice on what to do ?
