  1. First - for the flight - does your laptop have a DVD player?  If so, get one or more of the following movies

    1. Only You (Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey)

    2. Roman Holiday (Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn) -

    3. Gladiator (Russell Crowe)

Buy yourself a copy of the Rick Steve's book on Italy, 2-22 days - it will have a ton of great suggestions for Florence and Rome.  He's very easy to read.  You can flip through it on the plane.  Better yet, read it before you go so if you want to reserve some events in advance, you'll know how.

Put Dean Martin's album Italian Love Songs plus Volare and That's Amore on your IPOD; play it on the plane.

Try some Campari on ice with your dinner.

All this will put you in the right frame of mind.  Or, you can take some Melatonin and sleep through the flight!

Ok - now - critical things to see

Florence - there's a list on the Rick Steves' website of 'Florence in One Day.. Two Days... Three... etc.' that's worth looking at http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinati... but here are my favorites:

the Uffizi, the Accademia (Michelangelo's David), the Bargello (great statues), the Baptistry doors, the Duomo and then there's a multitude of great places to eat and to have the world's greatest gelato (my favorite flavor is 'riso')

In Rome, must sees are:  Do the R. Steve's fountain walk at night - it's a great after dinner stroll and the lit fountains (and street parties you will find enroute) are amazing.  Shop in the nice shopping area near the Spanish Steps.  The Vatican Museum.  St. Peters.  The Colusseum and Forum - ruins of ancient Rome.  The Pantheon.  Sit in one of the cafes outside the Pantheon and just people watch.  Have dinner in Trastavere.  Shop the Via dei Condotti.

If you're finding yourself interested in the ancient history, you can take a 1 day train-tour to Herculaneum and Pompeii.

Positano - haven't been yet but dying to go........ I hear it's a great place to sit on the cliff, stare at the gorgeous ocean below (and the beautiful people around you) and drink cold martinis........

  2. Bring a journal to write in

CD player with lots of batteries

    crossword puzzle book

    a good novel

    maybe a magazine or 2

    Have fun !

  3. If you are flying econonmy on Alitalia make sure you bring good socks.  The flight is so long, delayed and the "in flight entertainment" they promise doesn't work it's torture.  Oh and the seats are so tiny they almost seem like some form of torture.  Also, they don't have plugs at each seat so you can bring electronic devices, but you will only get limited usage.  I suggest bringing a sedative so you can sleep through the flight.

Although, many Italians in the larger cities speak at least a  little English I would hightly suggest bringing any medicine you might need.  My husband takes an antacid, and it took us buying about 3 boxes before we actually got what we were trying to ask for.  Also, check with the hotels you are staying in.  We stayed in moderate hotels, clean, nice, but not 5 star and none of them had irons.

I know it seems cheesy, but take the red bus in Florence,  It stops at or near all the major sites and really is fun.  Get the "Let's Go Italy" book, it was great!  I used it my whole trip.  It had a ton of great tips, money saving advice and time saving advice.

  4. Positano ? Funny... oh naturally is a very fine place, but I think you booked in advance there, Have you seen the map ? Once there ?

If eventually you should like to visit Napoli, Capri, Ischia, Pompei... how could you easily go out that bowel in summer ?
