I would take out most of the water, not feed it for a day after, return the water back to the tank per the information I found online. That would work fine. I also kept feeding him less and less till I found the right amount to give him so that it wouldn't happen. He would occasionally look like he was going to die, I would do whatever I could and then he would make a miraculous recovery. Recently he died and I'm sad since I put a lot of love and effort into him. What did I do wrong?

  1. From your description it sounds as if you have done nothing wrong.

Your fancy may just have had deformed internal organs and suffered chronic swim bladder. In the end there was probably nothing else you could do for him

  2. A goldfish requires a minimum of a 20 gallon tank.  If you keep them in smaller tanks their growth becomes stunted and their internal organs get squashed.  This puts pressure on the swim bladder and will lead to death from organ failure.
