he tried to add us to his insurance policy but his agent said that we couldn't be added because we didn't live in with him. How can we get the car insured?

  1. you can get your own policy. Not all insurances accept having a different owner other than the person being insured, so make a research of what companies are do accept that

  2. If your father in law is listed as a registered owner because of the loan then he is required by law to be insured on it.  You might be able to add all 3 of you as registered owners and that way it doesn't matter if you live together or not.

The other option is to change your address with the DMV so that when the insurance company runs everyone's license they all come back to the same address.  The only downside to that is all of your DMV stuff will go to your father in law's house.  But that should just be yearly registration, license renewals, etc which you don't get very often.  That's probably the best option.

  3. just  like the person said before me.Cant you get your own policy just call and set up its easy

  4. Buy it like everyone else.

  5. What do you mean "he signed papers"?  Did he cosign your loan or is the car in fact your father-in-law's?  If the car is in your name, you buy your own insurance.

  6. get your own policy

  7. Is your husband on the loan with his father?  If not he may have to get on the loan.  This same thing happened to me.  My mom was going to take the loan in her name until we discovered at the dealer that the insurance could not be in my name if the loan was not in my name.  So, I went on the loan with her and was able to insure the vehicle.

  8. You will have to get insurance on your own application. If you can not get insurance check to see if there is a system of assigned risk insurance, but that is expensive.

  9. insure it yourself
