My father is French - I have just discovered. How do I get a French passport?

I have found out through a DNA test I am the illegitimate child of a French man living in the city of Paris. I am a married adult living in London. Am I entitled to a French passport, and how do I get it? Do I need to go to the French home office? What do I take? How long does the process take? What am I entitled to? Any help very much appreciated, thanks.

  1. wow, that sucks

one day you're a regular good old brit,

the next day you find out that you are a dirty, smelly, arrogant frog.

...and i though I was having a bad day.

    well, my condolences to you,

and the best bet would be to never tell anyone,

and remember to bring a white flag with you if you ever get called into battle (just in case the french side of you takes over)

  2. Why do that, get a hold of someone at the state department apply for dual citizenship.  Esp, if you can prove he is the father(you said you got a DNA test, so shouldn't be hard.)

  3. If your father didn't legally declared it, then you'll have to ask the justice to make a statement about it. Most of the time in France, if the DNA test proves that you're his child, he won't have much choice and will be legally declared as your father. This is the first step. If you're not legally declared as his child, you have no right.

Then, you'll have all the papers things to do, and it might take a while, but yes, you have the right to have the French nationality. Hurry, because more and more laws tend to make things harder to get the French nationality at these times.

  4. Even though a DNA test can prove that you are this man's child in order to obtain French citizenship this man will have to prove that he has French citizenship because in order to obtain French citizenship your paperwork relies on your father. Meaning he will have to acknowledge you and most likely loan you his French passport, naturlization or birth certificate for you to obtain French citizenship.

If you are British there isn't much point in you obtaining French citizenship as your British citizenship offers the same amount of privledges as the UK and France are both part of the EU.
