Question:

My father is retired military. I'm trying to get funding to go to college.?

Am I eligible for the G.I. Bill or any other type of educational aid. I was told by a classmate that I can only get it if my father was deceased or injured while in the military .But he wasn't is this true?

  1. Yes this is true.  If you are not a veteran, you don't qualify for their benefits unless they are dead or disabled.

    Hubby's father is a 20 year Air Force Vet and my dad is 10 year Navy Vet and neither one of us qualified for education benefits for their military service.

Under the new Post 9/11 GI bill, maybe.  Unfortunately it does not go into effect until August 2009.  Your father would have to be on active duty or reserve duty after August 2009.  Also, the new GI bill is service specific.  The individual services have not yet specified what they will offer.  For instance, Army may offer transferability to dependents while Navy may elect not to.  Please see the link for more information.
