Question:

My favorite chess pieces -- Does this style have a name?

I don't know if there's only one set like this, but I really love the chess pieces with the bishop's, queen's, and/or king's tip to be the opposite team's color. Here is an example:

Do any of you guys know the name of this style? Any information or links to other similiar sets would help.

Thanks,

Derek

  1. The general style of these pieces (not the brand name or model name or whatever) is Staunton (see the little logo in the upper right corner?).  These are considered to be standard chessmen by most chess players worldwide.

  2. That Staunton style was common in the USSR where bishops did not have a "notch" so the top "button" was colored the opposite color to differentiate it from the pawns.

Done right it looked cool and exotic.  Must have caught on.

  3. Every example I found has just the queen & king tip in opposite color.  Depending on the size of the board, the sets are called:

    --Senator

    --Consul

    --Ambassador/Royal
