I had not idea. Check out the link and read the article supporting...well...supporting these food giants to help promote animal welfare....

Boca Foods, maker of vegetarian burgers and other vegetarian products, is now owned by hot dog giant Oscar Mayer; ConAgra owns faux-meat maker LightLife; and Dean Foods, the largest dairy products company in the world, owns White Wave, the maker of Silk soy milk and other nondairy products.

  1. I didn't know. But truthfully being vegan is hard enough for me as it is, and there is no way i would be able to do it if i cut those products out.

  2. wow, i didn't know. i second having a vegan island!

  3. honestly it doesn't bother me.....

they still know where the money comes from.  they can still see when they are looking at sales figures that there is a rise or fall in profit from vegetarian goods.

think of it this way....if enough people support buying vegetarian-specific products from a meat-producing company, they may decrease production of meat products and increase production of vegetarian products.

consumers have A LOT of power, and the products we're purchasing dictate the future of the market, regardless of the company they're purchased from.

i have no problem buying boca products, as long as they know it's boca i'm buying and not an oscar meyer weiner.

  4. You can't avoid animal use, it's everywhere. Even your precious vegetables are sprinkled with cow s**+.t before you eat them. Or does it not count as part of an animal when its the p**p? Because I know vegans are against milk...hmmm. I dunno, I don't get it.

  5. The fact that they would sell out to these corporations disgusts me even more than the new ownership.

  6. i heard a term that might help you.  "Locavore" folks whom only eat what they grow or what grows locally.  IF we could try for this goal and use large corporate store even a little less it would help.  not only because you are not supporting then, but because less fossil fuels will be used - local means no big 18 wheelers were used to get your food to you.  buy from farmer's markets.  you could try to see some good - if those big corporate co. are buying up alot of veggie type co. then they must be thinking about the shift in consumer buying which is a shift to buying more veggie products.  a good thing on some levels.   thanks for the info - i wasn't totally unaware but this just confirms some educated guesses.  :)

  7. NO.... and i totally just bought some boca burgers... this is just wrong! and gross!

  8. Its hard when you think you are doing the right thing. Its hard to find that sort of information when you are actually doing your weekly grocery shop.

  9. i dont buy that stuff anyways so it didnt bother me too much.

  10. It's just impossible to avoid all cruelty. At least by buying silk soymilk and all of that c**p, you raise the demand for meatless/nondairy foods.

  11. So Philipmoris the cigarette people own one of the largest food companies in the world. That is really gross.

  12. But Boca Burger are just so goddamn good!

  13. I don't really care who it's owned by as long as the quality of the product dosen't change frankly.
