She is spayed, 12 1/2 years old, around 75 lbs. This began approx. 1 year ago and she takes one 50 mg tablet of Proin daily. She can take take two, but I worry about giving her this drug. She is dripping urine very often now. What can be done, or are there other meds out there? Surgery does not help according to the vet. Thank you in advance for your answers.

  1. They make  plastic lined pants for dogs that size,  I don't think there is anything else you can do.  A dog that size doesn't usually live past 10-11.  Sorry,  be kind to her and make her last days her best.  You can do it.

  2. You may not like this idea but I did it with my German Shepard and she didn't mind one bit.I got the disposable training panties for toddlers, and cut a hole out for her tail. She would stand her front feet on a step and I would put her back legs through the panty legs and pull her tail through the hole I cut out as I pulled them up.She seemed to think it made her special because she would parade herself .At her age surgery of any kind is so hard on them Good Luck

  3. i have delt with this in the past...

its hard... surg can help depending on the reason for her problem

limiting water to certain times can help but with older dogs they need more water... so its difficult

she has lost the "holding" muscles and most likely the feeling of "i got to go" and just doesnt know it and dripps and goes...

potty pads in the house can help... they tend to go in certain areas...

seek another opinion, ask another vet

  4. You HAVE to give the Proin twice a day if you want it to work, because the drug only stays in the dog's system for 12 hours.  Even owners who give the meds 13 hours apart notice some accidents in the time between tablets. There is one other med to try but I can't remember the name.  We use Proin a LOT, this is a pretty common problem in female dogs, and I haven't seen any adverse reactions so far.  There's no surgical solution, and at her age I'd be reluctant to put her under if I didn't have to.  At her age and weight, she's in her late 80's at least.  The problem is her bladder sphincter isn't holding tight enough.  The Proin increases muscle tone.  You can't tighten things surgically.
