  1. i agree with the lady above, having a playdate is a wonderful idea.Especially if you adopt it from a shelter, the people there after caring for the ferrets day in and day out usually have a good idea as to the different personalities of the ferrets up for adoption. Thats what we did here in a pensacola fl. There is a ferret sanctuary here, and they actually encourage play dates to basically let your ferret pick out another ferret. We actually ended up adopting two that day because they all 3 got along so well,, and my ferret was basically ignoring all the rest of the ferrets. i've never had any problems since i brought them home.

and the nipping thing is very typical, thats how ferrets interact with other ferrets. There skin is naturally tougher. its only cause for concern if they are drawing blood or hurting the other ferret. but when it comes to people its a good idea to nip train them because they dont know any better. ( if its an issue for you). Ferrets playing together is hilarious, if you just just look at you tube videos you would know what i mean! oh also a clear tunnel tube i got for my ferrets is a big hit with them. good luck!

  2. I used to rescue abused and abandoned ferrets and rehabilitate them.  Some of the ferrets I got in my care had never seen another ferret since they left the pet store[years and years of time between].  I introduced him to 2 new ferrets from a litter that were about 4 months old and they all got along great.  I once had eight ferrets in a cage at the same time and they were of different ages and sexes.  Unless your ferret is aggressive towards other animals[cats, dogs etc] I'm sure you wont have a problem.  Ferrets love company so they normally take what they can get in that aspect.  I'm sure your old ferret will love having a playmate!!

    Good Luck!

  3. I am owned by five ferrets Tink, Bell, Neek, Lily, and Franky. I also rescue ferrets. My five all live in one cage and none are from the same litter. They rang in age from over 3 to just a year. They get along great. They also get along with my three dogs and one of my two cats. My second cat is 11 years old and some what of a grouch.

Ferrets are social animals and normally do well with other ferrets. However i have heard of many that do not like ANY other ferret and some for some odd reason don't like certain ferrets.

What I suggest you do is have a play date with the two ferrets to see if they will get along.

  4. Is this a ferret shelter?  Ask them if they'll let you bring your ferret there to see how he reacts with other ferrets.  When I adopted a ferret from a shelter here I brought my eldest ferret with me to pick one.

Well he was playing with this one beefy boy ferret but this adorable female was following him every where he went.  It reminded me of Sally on the Peanuts cartoons following Linus around LOL  And if he turned around she'd dance backwards and dook.  So needless to say, I had to pick her.

Most shelters will let you bring your ferret over.  The last thing they want is for the ferret to have to come back to the shelter if it doesn't get along with yours.  Plus I think they're much more assured that the ferret is going to a good home if you show up with a happy, healthy ferret.  As I'm a shelter volunteer I've even had the shelter mom bring me ferrets to see if mine get along with them.  One day she tricked me and brought three over instead of the pair I was expecting so BIG SURPRISE - all three stayed!

Nipping is very normal in ferrets.  If it's just play nips, that's fine.  If it's biting - where he's latching on or breaking skin then that isn't. A friendly dog and a ferret are quite amusing to watch, aren't they?  When I adopted my Newf/Lab I also had just got a little kit that was also 10 weeks old.  Those two were like watching a cartoon LOL http://www.ferretocious.com/match2.html

Ferrets are VERY social and in all the years I've had them I've NEVER introduced a new one that wasn't instantly welcomed.  To me it seems like you're a frat house and you're just adding another "brother" - "Dude - grab a mug!  We tapped a keg!" LOL

Good luck!  I'm sure Nick will be THRILLED to finally have another "him" in the house and that poor dog is going to get NO rest!  Have you ever heard him "dook"?  Dooking is often something ferrets only do with other ferrets so you may discover a whole lot of new noises from your little once his new friend arrives!
