He has tried to catch up with his boss a number of times but he's always busy alternating between 2 other plants. I've told him to go over his boss's head but having said that i don't want to ruffle any feathers either but h**l he's meant to be getting full pay by now. Any ideas? Btw he's a mechanical engineer.

  1. I'd keep trying to get to the boss, without going over his head.  Can he e-mail the boss?  If there is a human resources department, he can give them a call to see if it's simply a clerical error.

In fact, he may want to approach the boss that way.  Say something like- I passed probation a month ago, and payroll still hasn't adjusted my salary.  Who do I see to get this corrected?

Good luck.  Tell him to stay after them.  As others said, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

  2. They do this at alot of jobs, i've been in this situation before and the bosses and supervisors give lines like "the probationary period ending is the time when we start to evaluate your performance, when that is looked at and approved of you'll get that pay increase"

  3. My boyfriend just went through the same thing. Actually had to catch his boss while he was washing his hands in the bathroom. He sent him Emails too. He is finally getting his evaluation tomorrow and his review next week. Tell your boyfriend to keep trying until he makes headway. good luck.

  4. I wouldn't ruffle feathers, either.  I would leave a written note on boss' desk, as well as an email explaining that he has been asking to meet with him to discuss the fact that his probation period is over.  I'd say that I'm not trying to take away from his time at the other 2 plants so if they need to meet early or after work he'd be happy to do that.  He can also say that he's caught on well, or something about the project he's working on and it's going well--he'll know what to say--and he's looking forward to talking to the boss.

If that doesn't work I'd go to HR and ask, on the pretext of making sure he understands the process, shouldn't he be meeting with his boss since it's already a month over the probation ending.  The HR rep ought to offer to call his boss to remind him, but if he/she doesn't, then I'd ask if it's possible for HR to call and remind boss that this guy is in this "limbo" status, and he needs to take you to the next step.

A lot of times they put off taking an employee off probation because it will mean a salary increase, and that's part of the overall budget of that particular department.  He needs to be persistent until he gets his meeting with this guy.  Is there an admin assist who will know when the boss is coming back from the other plants?

I don't think he should go over his boss' head in a "WTF" way but I think HR could help your fiance' out, and they can do it tactfully, like they're just following up on his status.  He has to be more persistent.

Good luck!  The company sounds lucky to have him :-)

  5. Lambchop, just suggest (like your question) that he check with the paymaster.  I'll bet it's an oversight so I wouldn't get too bothered by it. Remember the best rule ever:  It's the squeaky wheel that gets oiled.

Now, I think I start getting oiled for the weekend (kidding.)
