i have been looking at many girt jumping bikes. I will be going down some trails and a l.ot of jumping on this bike. What do you think would be better for me? single speed, or a bike with a rear derailler (don't know how to spell that :) with 8 speeds?

  1. A singlespeed cannot be beat for jumping.

If your main goal is jumping then for a geared bike try a chain tensioner and a single front sprocket with a bigring replacing bash guard plate. It will help keep your chain on and keep the chain from getting damaged on bad landings.

I hope this can be of help to you.

  2. If you plan on doing any trail riding at all, you'll want gears unless they're flat trails without too many hills and tight turns.  You can ride those trails on a singlespeed, too, of course, but it's not as much fun if you want to go fast.   Singlespeed is nice and quiet, but it's best for park, street, and dirt jumps in my opinion.

You can always convert things later for not too much money, if you decide you want to switch....cheaper and easier to do that when going from gears to singlespeed, rather than the other way around.

Enjoy the new ride....shred it!   :o)

  3. Girt is best jumped with a single speed; lighter and nothing much to break or adjust after all the wipe-outs.

  4. If you are getting a dirt jumping MTB, then it will usually have a rear deraillur. But BMX type jumping bikes are only single speed.Which in my opinion is better, as there is less stuff to break/maintain.
