My finch puffs up but still flies...what does this mean?

he puffs up outside but still is happy, for example, he still flies and eats.

Should I put them some where else?

  1. He may have ate some rice. If they eat enough rice, they tend to puff up to the point of explosion. Be careful with that.

Could be cold, could be beginning to moult (they often puff up while moulting because the pin feathers coming in poke in all directions and it's very uncomfortable!) - could be an illness, but if there are no other signs like lethargy, loss of appetite, diarhhea, etc., you can usually just chalk it up to maybe a temperature issue or moulting.

    Is the bird kept indoors in A/C? Is it near a vent? Maybe try checking on the temperature where he is kept and see if covering a side exposed to any drafts helps.

  4. Birds just do this.  I have a cockatiel and he does this also esp. when he gets ready to sleep or take a nap.  If he is by a air duct it might be wise to move him...but it's totally normal.  They just fluff their feathers out to relax I guess so to speak.  I'm not sure why, but it's typical!

  5. Probably it's trying to attract a mate while flying, which likely is impossible in your area , but all birds act on instinct
