Question:

My first Ramadhan- advice?

Asalamu Alaiykum!

This will be my first Ramadhan, as I am a recent convert to Islam. I have tips like "wean yourself from caffeine" and "eat light foods", but there's obviosuly much more than what food and drink to mind and eat. Mental state is important too.

What I need are some tips for enduring Ramadhan- during SCHOOL! The month of Ramadhan is during my first month of school- and I'll need some helpful hints to keep me going!

Thank you and salaam!

  1. Start fasting now, like on Mondays and Thursdays just to get used to it ahead of time. Then when the time comes, you will be used to it.

  2. WA alaikum alsalam wa rahamatu Allah wa barakatuhu

first of all congratulations for converting i'm so happy for you

secondly take it easy there's nothing for you to worry about i'm a teacher and a mother nothing goes wrong with me in Ramadan just try not to over eat after Maghreb the more you'll eat the hungrier you get the next day

another thing drink as much water as possible and at suhur i drink tea it quenches your thirst during the day

  3. i have a secret weapon...

if you can, take naps, like when u get home from school or sometime from 12-iftar(when you break your fast). this will reenergize you and really pass those long hours.

also, lots of ppl wake up before the sun rises to eat. if you arent used to it, you may feel sick after eating, especially at that time in the morning. dont eat foods that will make you thirsty, just drink water and eat foods like bread, veges, fruit, something like that. not like waffles w/ syrup or oily things. that will make you sick! trust me.i dont know about coffee that early if you are plannin on going to bed after before you go to school a few hrs later.

inshallah those tips will help. as for when you break your fast, dont eat too much, because you will become lathargic and just sluggish. that isnt good if you plan on going to the mosque. right after you eat, its like go time, you have to eat, pray maghrib, clean up and run to the mesjad so if you are super full, it wont help. just try, i know its hard!!

    good luck!

  4. Walaikum Salaam

Well this is my 2nd. =] And now that you tell me, I have just remembered how excited I am =O. I didn't even know I was that excited.

But yeah, best tips. Wake up to eat before Fajr. Don't stuff after you break your fast, eat little by little untill you feel full.

During school makes it soooo much easier TRUST me. You don't eat during the day at school anyways so this takes your mind away from it.

I also advise, make sure you brush your teeth before Fajr, this is for the sake of others, not you!! Lol...

    Salaam

  5. i remember school was easier during Ramadan, i could study and focus very well, actually to eat one's fill makes the brain so lazy, so inshallah it won't be that bad, live the month of Ramadan as the rest of the months.

oh, don't forget to recite the Qur'an, it also helps, and if you have more time, try to attend any Ramadani talk at your Mosque.

may Allah reward you and bless you.

  6. Wa alaikum salam my dear sister..Welcome to become muslim woman. For the first ramadan you should

1)Say an intention that you will fast during ramadan this year for Allah the only one God

2)You must make an early breakfast or sahur just at least 15 minutes before the shubuh prayer come with light foods, veget

ables and fruits adequately for one third of your stomach with fresh water drinking..(do not eat too much)

3)You must avoid bad doings including bad sayings and make more good doings  including give donation/alm for the poor and pray on time at least 5 times a day

4)You can take a nap after you pray on ashar time until come the time for breakfast just after maghrib time by saying for YOU Allah my fasting and by YOUR Subsistence (Rezeki) I will break my fasting .You are better  to start your dinner with light sweet meal such as porridge and dates (kurma),soup and bread which are easily digested adequately (do not eat too much)

    5) After isya shalat on time you are better to make taraweeh sunnah shalatt for 11 raka'ats including the last 3 raka'ats for witr and reciting Qur'an for several verses or ayats at night before going to bed.

  7. first of all congratulations sister.  I would say that getting up for suhoor before fajr is very important.  It will mean also that you are eating twice a day instead of just once so since this is your first time fasting inshalalh that will help a lot.  Also, get plenty of sleep.  Try and sleep after fajr and if you can sneak in an afternoon nap that would be great.  being in school actually may help because as long as you stay busy it makes the day go by quicker.

  8. lol i play sports while fasting its nothing serious :)

    Dont worry.

  9. waa alaykum alsalam

The best advise i can give you to avoid from getting hungry is to wake up maybe half an hour before salat al fajar and eat breakfast (this is called sihour) and the prohphet Mohammed used to do it to avoid being hungry.

When it's dawn and the maghrib prayer calls, Eat soup and salad only,, go pray and then come back to eat the main course. Why? because your stomach hadn't had any food from the dusk so if you eat at one time, your stomach will hurt and will be really slowly to digest any food.

  10. im soo proud of you i could kiss you!

whenever its time to aftur, have a light meal.

so you wont crave food during the day, the next day.

and drink lots of water before you sleep

  11. Well, I welcome you, first of all, into Islam sister.

Try not to think of your fasting as a weakening experience. Just don't think about your hunger or your weakness because you won't be weak. I actually felt more strength the last Ramadan because I didn't care about my not having food or drinks. It is simple. You have 365 days. Only 30 days (actually half 30 days) are for fasting and the rest (335) days are for you to eat and drink as much as you can. That is, it is a simple covenant with God.

Just don't try to take it hard and act as if you are weak and that you're dying for some food! It isn't that hard. It is just a matter of hours. Moreover, although I don't know what is your system of studying, when you come home, you don't need time for eating or drinking and you can do your studies earlier.

    Salam.

  12. wa aleikis salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

    congratulations!!!

ur question IS a bit hard to answer though.  :)

for mental preparation what might help u is, try to learn and read LOTs of ramadaan articles, books etc.

that is a very good way to prepare before it comes.  you can also try fasting the month of Shabaan, when the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast lots.

some ppl they miss out... when they keep delaying preparation, and ramadaan comes and they don't use their time productively... ie. in Qur'aan recitation etc. but pass time with much laziness, ignorance and sleep.  by the time they feel emotionally in their prayers and worship, alas! the ramadaan has passed!

for food.. the best/sunnah way to break fast... what I recall from b4 is, with dates, water or milk.  then have something light (better for digestion since u haven't eaten in a while).. after maghrib prayer, before isha (specially if you are going for tahajjud to the masjid) you can have food again if u need.  but u might feel quite lazy after breaking fast. :) or even want to sleep.

if you have school, and you want to read qur'aan, or pray extra prayers specially tarawih and tahajjud.. you need to have plans.  plans might not work all the time but atleast u have a plan and u r striving.  and eventhough u might be very attracted to go for prayers and things, you really have to stick to ur plan(except sometimes) to keep going.. becuz ur mind wud be in a mess if u r doing bad at school.

ok that's all for now, and will update u later inshallah.

wa aleykum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh
