I have asthma and have been running for weight loss and to fight diabetes. I am not diabetic, however, my goal is to run four half marathons to represent my Native people on the reservation with diabetes.

  1. Your pace will depend on your physical conditioning and aerobic capacity.  A good rule of thumb for distance running is that you should be able to hold a normal conversation throughout the run.  I'm not saying that you should talk constantly during while running, just that you should be able to.  If you start breathing so heavy that talking becomes difficult, you are running too fast.

Also I recommend gradually adding distance through a series of training runs before running an actual marathon or half-marathon.

    Good Luck!

  2. Never set a time on your first long race.  Focus on COMPLETING the event.  Once you see where you are and if you can do it, you can start scaling the time and work on getting faster.

  3. kinda slow what ever you are comfortable wit

  4. just go with a pace that you feel comfortable with.

  5. if you have been training but are not a competitive runner an ideal pace would be around 10 minute miles. this would get you like a 4:30, which is pretty good time.

however, if your desired pace is more or less--it does not matter. the point of the marathon is to finish. (unless you are one of those Kenyan runners that wants to win the race). do not get to hang up on the time but the overall goal: FINISHING. believe it or not that is a huge accomplishment, even if you finish in 10 hours. do you know that only 1% of Americans have ever finished a marathon. nevertheless, you want to have fun. so go out there, have fun and finish the marathon.

advice: to prevent injuries, start out nice and slow. most marathons are in the morning and the temperature is a little chilly, so warming your muscles up is essential. remember the first 2 miles are the most important.

i am proud you have decided to loss weight and live a healthier life by running. i wish more people were like that. keep it up. GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!!
