Question:

My fish are comitting suicide!?

0 LIKES UnLike

In the last few days 4 of my fish have died

At first I thought it was something to do with the water so I tested it, changed it and replaced all the filters early

The temperature is also fine

There was no problems so I wasn't sure what was wrong

Until this morning, I saw one of the fish jump out and hit the lid of the tank really hard

A few minutes later it was dead

Why would they be doing this??

I'm rapidly running out of fish here

  1. Is it possible that you have a small electrical current running threw the tank? I have heard of jumping and other bizare behaviour being caused by this....good luck

  2. There is not enough oxygen in the water or there is some sort of parasite/illness and you will lose the lot.

Fish usually jump out due to lack of oxygen though.

  3. Have you not over filled it.  Maybe they are trying to get out because they are drowning.

  4. idk what to do but thaths funny lol

  5. ... this is hard maybe you should try different fish

  6. I'm so sorry, I feel your pain, I've been there but LOL!!!!!!!!

  7. You're not meant to replace filters.. It says that you should on the instructions so the company that makes the filters can suck more money out of you.

Fish do jump.. So keep the water level a couple of inches below the lid, so they dont hit themselves hard.

Dont change the filters anymore, just do water changes and cleans once a week.. And then see what happens.

  8. If all vitals in tank are ok, could be disease = check website below for buoyancy issues.  Could also be another fish chasing them and they jump to escape. In that case, isolate aggressive one.  They will also do this in overcrowding so consider a bigger tank.

  9. There is a problem with the water, switching out the filters will have effectively thrown all your good bacteria away leaving your tank prone to an ammonia spike, causing your fish to die off.

Filter media should never have to be changed, only rinsed in old tank water, unless you're restarting a tank after a disease outbreak.

Test your water again with a liquid test kit to include ammonia/nitrate/nitrite. Do daily partial water changes on your tank until any ammonia/nitrite reading is down to 0 and holding. Research to make sure you don't have any very heavy waste producers or that you are overstocked causing more susceptibility to ammonia spikes.

Edit: Both Pangasius and Silver Sharks (presuming Bala Sharks) are very skittish fish, is there anything around the tank that could have startled them, causing them to dash around, causing injury to their tankmates and themselves? 300 litres is too small for pangasius anyway, they need more 600 litres plus. And Bala Sharks should be in a shoal in at least 350-400 litres. If not that, I would look for any other signs of diseases and still do daily water changes as the removal of your good bacteria by changing the filter media will have upset the natural balance within the tank.

  10. You have fish as well? LOL... Maybe the cat has been feeling inadequate because of the Huskies so she is picking on the fish whispering suicidal thoughts into their little fishy ears at night....:-)

Aww good luck..I know zilch about fish psychology.

  11. The top contributor is pretty much right I think.  If the fish aren't being startled by anything then it could possibly be a disease.  I know that carp in lakes will jump out of the water to try and get parasites and worms washed or knocked off them.  Tropical fish are also acceptable to parasites like this that live in the gills and jumping out the water dislodges them and solves the problem (after a lot of jumping). Best bet speak to someone at you local fish shop and look for a medication to get rid of parasites and flukes.  Hope this helps.

  12. Mrs GC, maybe you've answered your own question.

Is there a Samaratins for fish?

Hope your remaining 2 are okay xx

  13. I am no expert but i think the water might be too clean and don't forget the fluoride content of tap water , a bit of gunge in there from plants is helpful . but no expert know somebody with fish .

  14. try changng things?

  15. Some fish instinctively try to escape.  You might have  Snakeheads? I had a snakehead and came home everyday he was on the floor.  You have to try to cover any holes they think that they can get out.
