  1. Unfortunately, Melafix is NOT a medication.  It is a preventative, irritating the skin to produce more mucus (another preventative).  If you actually want to stop the bacterial infection, use a medication like Maracyn 2, Maracyn TC, TC Capsules, Furan 2, Kanaplex, Triple Sulfa, or Trisulfa.  These will be far more effective, and allow you to use Melafix AFTER the infection is done.  Remove any activated carbon from the filter during treatment, and if using medications that list tetracycline or minocycline as active ingredients, keep the tank dark, as these drugs degrade with exposure to light.

If you treated it too late..

  3. The dead parts fell off. This is normal and within the next week or so, you should be able to see them begin to grow back.

  4. Fin Rot is contagious, not extremely, but it can be. If your fish is with other fish, take him off and put him in a hospital tank. Fin Rot can come back.

Keep adding the melafix, and you also may wanna by some aquarium salts as a precaution.

If your fish is a Betta, there is such thing called a BettaFish Remedy! It'll help grow back the fins.

Otherwise, give it 1-3 weeks before the fins grow back, maybe not completely, but good enough. Keep your eyes on him.

  5. Well it sometimes is normal. I had a fish that did the same thing, he may have a fin disease.  It is nothing to worry about, They will grow back.
