i've had 2 guppies in my tank for a few weeks, and this morning i woke up to one being sucked up in the filter =/ i haven't seen the other eat since, and i've noticed she's looking unusually skinny. i put food in the tank but she doesn't even try to swim up, she just sits on the gravel at the bottom of the tank. when she actually does swim up to the food, she just skims the water with her mouth open and misses all the food. does anyone know what's wrong and why my fish isn't eating?

  1. I had my tank for almost 3 months and I had an ammonia spike and my platies were at the top gasping for air.  I had 8 and 5 died.  I took me a week and changing my water every day to fix the problem.  I changed out 20% every day and tested my water every day.  I think the problem started because I was overfeeding them.  I was doing a weekly water change every week of 20% before this happened.  The fish that were gasping for air would not eat.  I hope this helps.

  2. My guppies started doing that a month ago. The ones that were affected the most passed. When I realized the problem I did a couple of water changes(3) and they started doing better. I asked my fellow MTS friends why they got sick and they said most likely it was the water quality. Even though my test came out good something in the water wasn't right and they were affected by it. So I suggest doing 2 water changes according to your tank size (10%) during the week and see how your female feels after wards. But know that it may be to late to save her...cries...poor guppies...so easy to kill...cries.

  3. If you've only had the tank a few weeks, maybe the tank is cycling exceptionally slow and the guppies finally started feeling the side effects of the harmful chemicals in the cycling process. The ammonia or nitrite would leave the fish feeling lethargic and weak. Most do sit at the bottom.

  4. What's your tank size and water parameters?  Sounds like she could be suffering from poor water quality.
