Question:

My fish tank is getting foggy.

After 1 week of owning a new fish tank (20 gallons), the water is starting to get foggy. I have 11 small fish in it (golden swordtail, black leopard platy, red platy, and balloon molly). I was told to clean the tank every 2nd week. Am I doing something wrong because the water is getting foggy after one week?

  1. you have to make sure the filter is on its correct speed, make sure u are using the easy balance, and the aqua safe. if u do that u shud be fine, and dont give them too much sunlight

    EASY BALANCE:

Aquarium Water Conditioner 100ml by Tetra will help to reduce the need for frequent water changes by replicating the refreshing action. With Nitrate Reduction Granules, Easy Balance Aquarium Water Conditioner stabilises pH, water hardness and lowers the phosphate levels of your tank. Used weekly, Easy Balance Aquarium Water Conditioner will keep your aquarium's water fresh for up to 6 months.

    AQUA SAFE

Protects your fish from chlorine and other harmful metals in tap water. Excellent protectant.

  2. You'r not doing anything wrong beacause the water evaporates.

When the tank is closed the water droplings have no place to go and

become fog and fog up the tank.Try to open the tank once in a while with your supervision. After you clean the tank.

  3. You probably havn't given it enough time to filtrate right so it dosn't have a proper chemical ballance

  4. well you got a bunch of wrong anwsers let me tell you what is going on and what you need to do

you tank is going through what is called the cycle process this is where the tank builds up good bacteria basicly what happens is this excess food and fish waste turn into ammonia so the tank developes a bacteria that turns ammonia into nitrite and then another bacteria to turn nitrite into nitrate

the first 2 are bad for fish ammonia is the number 1 killer in new tanks

since you have fish in the tank you may need to do partial water changes weekly or even everyother day if you get and ammonia test kit it will really help you identfy when to do water changes

who ever told you to clean the tank every 2 weeks should have told you not to clean it at all untill it has cycled

test the water daily for ammonia if the level gets over 1.0 do a partial water change 25 percent

when the tank has finished going thru the cycle the ammonia and nitrite levels will go down to 0

since you are new to this and you have fish in the tank I would recomend you get some water siphoned from the gravel of an established tank and add it as is to your tank the more of this water you can get the better it will seed your tank with the needed bacteria and speed up the cycle and make it easier on your fish.

  5. It is most probably beneficial bacteria bloom which is a good thing.  Probably the only good thing going on in you tank right now.  Your new tank in going through what is known as the nitrogen cycle.  You need to start testing for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph. and quickly or your fish will die.  With that many fish in a cycling tank you will Your ammonia levels (which are caused by fish waste; left over food) are probably through the roof.  Your tank has not had time to populate the beneficial bacteria necesary to turn ammonia into nitrite and then nitrite into nitrate.   See the following link for more on tank cycling:

riffell is right don't listen to the  answers above him...and I would do a 50% water change right now!!  Two weeks for first cleaning is bad advice.  The site i linked is full of great advice.
