My fish tank is too small?

ok my tank is very small - like 5 L for 5 little goldfish

i will be away for a week and i'm worried about them because i usually change the water every 2 days because the tank is so small and they need lots of oxygen all the time

so i thought of putting them in a 10 L bucket...it's not glass or see through

is that ok? if they are swimming in a blue bucket? why are tanks glass besides the design reason...

  1. are you serious? 5l for 5 goldfish? 5 goldfish is going to need like 200 L (or 50 gallons) put I guess for now since they're small putting them in the 10L bucket would be ok, but seriously, you need to get a bigger tank.

  2. Well, since they can live in a pond that is not "see through" and those tub things made from "whiskey barrels" I guess if the bucket is big enough they could. You sure have your work cut out for you though. Is it possible for you to get an air pump, airline tubing and an air stone just to add some circulation while you are gone? Oh, the only reason aquariums are Glass is so YOU can see the fish. You are quite right about what I "think" you are thinking lol.

  3. well you need about 189L for  5 goldfish, they get big and prodce a ton of ammonia. while changing the water will help keep it clean, it will not give them room to grow.

please, find them a new home if you can not get the tank they need.

to keep them in the bucket, be sure the bucet has NEVER had anything like cleaning supplies or anything in it.

  4. it should be ok if you dont feed them the last two days until u go so all their p**p goes into the tank and make sure when you are filling the buket use the fish tank water but leave the p**p

  5. 5 liters is about 1 gallon.

and 10 liters is no better.

People like you make me sick. To buy fish for your enjoyment alone and not caring how the fish feels or the RIGHT way to take care of fish. And than you start spreading your ignorance to your kids and they spread it to their kids.

It sickens me how many animals are mistreated.

  6. Yes that is too small. Goldfish are highly potent to each other, and a single goldfish needs at least a 10 gallon tank. So with 5, that might be cutting it.

Changing the water every 2 days isn't good for them either.

It is getting the ammonia out, but it's also getting rid of the good

bacteria that grows in a tank.

Glass, is a tank because then you can see them, and light can get through. Why don't you get a tank set up, with a filter?

You can get a 10 GAL set up complete with filter at Walmart for about $25 dollars

  7. if your not changing the water  a lot then get a filter system go to pets mark or petco and ask someone and they will help you

  8. You've got a much bigger problem than just your vacation.

You CANNOT keep those fish in a tank that small, water changes or no water changes.  Goldfish need, need, NEED huge tanks.  A big tank is not something you get only if you have the room or the money, it is a *requirement* for keeping these fish.  If you can't get one, you shouldn't keep goldfish.  Period.

Goldfish get VERY large, and keeping them in small tanks stunts their growth and drastically shortens their lifespan.  Goldfish can live for 20+ years if kept in the correct environment, and the smallest goldfish is still going to top out at about 8 inches.  The largest ones can reach almost 2 FEET in length!  There is no such thing as a "little" goldfish--the small ones you see at pet stores are babies.

They also produce a LOT of waste, which means that even with water changes every two days they're still suffering from ammonia.  Lots of filtration is an absolute must.

If you're worried about your fish, then either provide them with the proper care or give them to someone who can.
