  1. Hello Preme:

Your 5 year old is doing fine and you should not be concerned about her letter recognition at this stage of her life.  She is just a baby learning to play and enjoy the world.  The great learning presures would come later.  This is the time for her to start socializing, playing with little kids, singing and dancing.

Children should start learning their alphabet and numbers when they reach school, around 6 years old.  Around 7, children enter into the age of reason and this is why they learn academically.

Please do not be concerned about preparing her for kiindergarden.  Enjoy her childhood with her.  If casually, as a game, she likes to play with learning letters, that is fine - but if not, relax.  I really do not advise you to put pressure on her at this stage of her life.

  2. that's no problem for the time being. she may have a late development in her speech and letter recognition. talk to her often and let her repeat the sounds of the letters more often.this  needs time and patience though. good luck.

  3. What do you expect?  She is only 5!!  She will learn all of this in kindergarten.  Just help her with recognition, sing the abc song, go on line and play fun alphabet games with her.  Don't make it a chore for her.  Make it fun! She is not behind!!  She is not "slow".  She is normal!!

  4. Our daughter was the same way its nothing really to worry about I had to learn.I would even cry sometimes over her not picking everything up.She even had to repeat kindergarten, her problem is hyperactivity. All you can do is keep on working with her and doing your best once she starts kindergarten you can get an in school tutor usually for free if she is falling far behind.

Also, you can look on ebay for phonics books and keep it fun for both of you so that neither one of you feel pressured.

Remember every child is unique and learns in their own time!

  5. My daughter is 5 and going to start kindergarten, she doesnt know every single capital and lower case letter but i help her work on it slowly and she is getting it, just do a little each time so they remember them : )

  6. You may need to work a little. I have a preschool and have some older threes and many fours that are already reading sight words. But we have a really good teacher at our school.

About half of the US states have standards for school readiness. Many states offer free preschool in private and public school settings. Florida even has a free summer program for 4 and 5 year olds going to kindergarten. If you're in FL you can still get in. Check your state's standards, you may be fine. If not, her kidergarten teacher will let you what you need to. In the meantime, read, read, read!

  7. wow, i might be a little concerned. i'm not sure if it's normal or not to learn that late. my son knew his at 3. you should really work with her.

  8. flash cards are great.  I started using flash cards with my now 3 1/2 year old back when she was 2 and she learned the alphabet by 2 1/2, both lower and uppercase.  There are lots of games you can play with them.  I bought my cards at Walmart and they had both upper and lower case.  We would play a matching game where I would put down all the uppercase cards facing up and she would have to match the lower case cards to the uppercase ones.  Your 5 y/o is still young, just work with her.  Kindergarten isn't what it used to be, they need to be reading by mid-year now so definitely work with her, she'll catch on.

  9. okay she should've learned her letters a little sooner like at 4 or 3! u should've been helping her. I say work with her, read books with her I'm a 1st grade teacher so I would say work more with her but in kindergarden she should really learn her letters more, she'll get the hang of it but i have students who are kinda in trouble learning their letters

  10. Just practice a letter each day and point out where they are in words (signs on the road and at the store, books, anywhere!). Teach her the sounds with the letters and use words that help with that.

I know in kindergarten when I was young we had a project where we had to cut out pictures from magazines for the different letters sounds (watermelon, water, etc for W). You could do that kind of project with her each day.

  11. Have her hearing checked.

  12. My son turned six in June. He is going to first grade. He knew his numbers to 100, he could count to 100. His fine motor skills weren't good(coloring, writing) he knew most of his letter sounds except he would mix up L and  K I think.Work with her. Go to Walmart they have coloring books and educational books for kids. By the time she finishes K she'll now it. Don't worry too much. My son's big issue is focusing on his work.
