my 5 year old son broken his arm and had 2 pins put in... it's only been two days after surgery and his cast is itchy... I have tried helping him out by putting a blow dryer on cool and blowing air on his arm, and very gently tried to ease his itch by scratching his arm with a chop stick.. I'm not sticking it down far... how else can i help him out? can his pins be easily moved if touched?

  1. The itch may be relieved by a 'counter irritant' such as menthol.  Try using a powder with menthol such as Gold Bond Medicated powder or Z-Sorb powder (which dries extremely well.  It may not be stocked but should be available over the counter).

  2. never put ANYTHING in the cast can break a stitch and cause a very nasty infection which could go to the bone and he could lose his arm.

I would suggest knocking on his cast.  use a spoon and tap the cast lightly in the place in which he itches.  give him Benadryl  or something similar to prevent itching.

    Good luck

  3. That's what we did was hit the cast not with a baseball bat, but a spoon worked good just like the other person suggested.  I agree don't put anything down the cast that's dangerous for whatever your trying to itch and you might do some more damage.   Benadryl is a good itch reliever.

  4. one way to help is to put baby powder in the cast and blow it with a blow dryer on cool. the baby powder will help dry out the cast and take away the moisture

  5. Give him some benadryl.  It will stop the itching.
