I left it on all night and now there are two purple lines in my countertop. Is there any product I might be able to use to get that up?

  1. It depends on what type of counter top you have? If it laminate No you will have to replace it. If its Granite or Corian  you may be able to talk to your local dealer and get a soft scrub cleaner and fix it.The cleaner is like the kind used for ceramic cook tops.Good Luck !!!

  2. If it is something  like formica  No you burned it. You can laminate right over the old counter top that would be the cheapest way to do it.

  3. I think you are in for a trial.  If the countertop is laminate, the purple discoloration has probably penetrated and burned it.

If it is wood, you have options you may not like.

Laminate:  the only thing I can think of is the Mr. Clean pads that come two to a box and are very reasonable.  If they will take ink, crayon, pencil marks, etc. off walls, they just might take out the discoloration.  You can get them at almost any store, grocery or home improvement.  Come in box that is about an inch thick, 2.75 X 4" long with Mr. Clean on the front.

It is a scouring type pad that does not take off even paint or drywall paper.  You just wet it, squeeze the water out, and try the scouring side first, then the sponge side after.  You may have the use finger pressure on the lines you describe.  Worth a try, and they can be used for just about any kind of marker removal etc. even if they don't work on your counter.

If wood, you should use very fine steel wool or extremely fine grit sandpaper, work only the lines, and hope you don't mess up the overall finish around it.  You can alway go back and try to match up the wood stain if it makes a different colored surface near the removed lines.

I would refrain from any kind of abrasive powder or liquid, even on the laminate type.  You will just remove the finish and be able to see the marred surface from an angle.  Would also stay away from any cleaning alcohol or other dissolving type solution.  That could actually spread your stain while diluting its color a bit.

Final solution is to, depending on where the marks are, either just cover it with a decorative cutting board or other decoration, or you could have someone cut out the entire portion and install a butcher block type cutting block, and seal the edges with a white caulk,, very small bead applied with a tube type product for kitchen/bath.
