my freezer has iced over for the third time this summer. i know how to defrost it and change the defrosting time, but i don't think three times in one summer is normal. i defrosted twice and even cleaned out the back from dust and so forth. the fridge/freezer is an older model, but i still don't think this is normal. any ideas as to what i can do, or would it be best to replace it?

  1. It usually means the door gasket is leaking.  If you're lucky, there's someone in the area who can come replace it right at your place - takes about 2 hours if they know what they're doing.

  2. you maybe opening the door too often or leaving it opened to long

  3. Don't put the Popsicles in there. haha

I went to one home where ice buildup was the case and they had several children and the neighbor kids were over. Plus they had a huge box of popsicles in there from costco. While I was there in less than 30 minutes checking it out the kids opened the door EIGHT times and sometimes stood there with the door open deciding which flavor.

And she wondered why she had to defrost so often?  Warm summer air holds much more moisture too.

Sometimes the door doesn't shut well and you don't notice. Many times I have found the door very slightly hitting something that leaves a tiny gap maybe in only one corner. But yet it seems to close fine when you push it closed.

It is hard to say. But there are only two options. It is not sealed well or you have excessive door openings.

Now if you tell me that it is only one coil that is frosting up then I might say the unit is getting weak.

    Good Luck.

  4. Door seal is definitely gone, needs to be replaced.

That or your freezer is to full, keeping the door ever so slightly opened that you don't even notice and it's giving you that problem.

    Happened to us.

A gasket will probably run you about $65-$75 depending on the freezer and a couple of hours to install if you do it yourself and have some knowledge on how to do it.

    Good luck.

  5. It is likely that the seals on your fridge are getting worn and so the humidity in the air is icing up your freezer more often.

You can get new seals, but it may not be much more expensive to get a new fridge.

  6. I think that the seal is not longer sealing when you close the freezer and air sips in causing the ice to build up , to test put some sheets of paper in between the rubber seal and close the door and pull on each sheet of paper to see if they slide out easy if they do you need to replace the rubber seal to the freezer.

  7. That usually happens when the power goes out.  Everything starts to defrost over which then creates moisture as it sweats.  When the power goes back on, the moisture turns to frost or ice.  I dont know where you are from but we have had a lot of storms this summer!
