My fridge doesn't get cold enough and the freezer doesn't freeze anything. Any one know what the issue is?

I don't want to pay for someone to check it out if possible; is there a part I can simply buy to fix this issue? It's an older fridge.

  1. first things first. If the unit has coils on the back, clean these with a vaccuum cleaner. If it doesn't, get your vaccuum down on the floor and clean out the tray in front, behind the grillework which pops off. Clean everything well there. There should be a flow tray also. If there is no water in it, or verfy little, pull out the veggie crisper drawers and look for a rubber or plastic drain plug. Remove this plug and gently push a pipe cleaner or something simliliar through this opening until it comes out the bottom of the unit. This could be plugged. Finally, put a dollar bill halfway inside the frig door, Can you pull it out easily? If you can, the seal might need replacing as the gasket has flattened too much to be effective. Make sure this thing is clean. Put a thermometer inside and leave the door closed for a while. Check and see ifg f it is getting to 40 degrees. If it is, you have no problems. Make sure the freezer blower and return are clean and not blocked. It's an inexpensive start

  2. It could be an accumulation of dust under the fridge blocking the air flow.  But, more likely you've got a ruptured line somewhere and the fridge is low on gas.  You'll need a refrigeration man for that.

  3. your freezer is probably frozen up. during the warm months a freezer will pump in overdrive and the rear drain will occasional freeze up and clog but you would see dripping comig thourgh the top of the fridge compartment form the freezer soooo. make sure your fan in the back isnt frozen. try unplugging the fridge and leaving the door open for the day. this should defrost it. also disassemble the fan cover and give it a turn manually and this sometimes gets it unstuck.

WHAT EVER YOU DO dont turn it UP! like everyone is saying, you will only make the problem worse and burn out your fridge.

otherwise your freon could be low (but this is unlikeley and usually only happens when a fridge is very old.

your fridge should never be set above its center setting. (if the dial goes to 9, you should neve put it past like 5 and so forth)

  4. A service call and a part or two exceed the worth of the refrigerator.

Follow the cleaning tips, maybe empty it,unplug it and open the doors for a day.

Plug it back in and see what happens.

If it doesn't work it is short of gas, compressor has a weak overload,or the start relay is defective.

  5. If it's pre-1993 it wouldn't be worth trying to fix, 'cause they're incredibly energy inefficient.

Also, if you've never cleaned the coils, you may want to try that.  If they are so gunked up, it can affect the circulation of cold air.

  6. that happened to mine too. why dont u try unplugging it and let it stay like that for a couple of hours. if thats not it try vaccuming the bottom of it from the front and back. good luck!

  7. well that happened to my fridge and i called the people who fixes fridges and in the backo f the fridge [where all the cables are] there is a motor slot thing that you can pull out. that thing when pulled out happened to be very dusty. then we cleaned it and the fridge was fixed;) i hope this helped...

  8. I don't know how old it is but I get the impression it's been around the block a few times, fixing it could be reasonable or expensive, the only way to be sure is to have a pro check it out,if it's old you might be better off replacing it.It might be a part that is worth replacing or it could be the compressor, make sure you check the coils on the bottom that they are clean by vacuuming them they can get dirty and cause this.

  9. yes its the motor or something in the back its gonna be cheeper to buy a new fridge go to habitat for humanity and theyll hook u up with a almost new one for a good price

  10. you could have a coolant leak, a bad compressor, failed circulating fan, damaged coils, any number of things, including the location in the house.  I

f it's making an unusual noise, try to track it down to where that's happening.  If it's not making any noise, I don't know what to do with that.

If you've recently moved it, try moving it back and see if it helps.  If you've stacked things around or on it, remove them.  Circulation around the appliance is very important to prevent heat build-up.

If it's fairly new, it may still be under warranty.  Even if it's not, check for recalls.  You may get it fixed for nothing if it's a manufacturer's defect.

    Good luck.

  11. Change the temperate on the top of the fridge down

  12. thermostat?

  13. there is a part you can buy to simply fix your fridge, the problem is you, like a lot of people on here, ask such a vague question. Guess what happens when almost anything on a fridge stops working properly? It doesnt get cold enough.

Off the top of my head I can think of 40 different things that could happen to cause a fridge not to cool properly.

Some are very major and expensive repairs, usually not worth the cost and time involved like a compressor replacement, but sometimes its as simple as a door not closing or a light bulb staying on.

I'll tell you this too. some of my customers wish they had called a professional service instead of doing more harm than good on their own. You want to know how many people have called us asking how much to fix "this coil in the freezer that has a hole in it" because they decided to CHIP ice away themselves, with a knife or screwdriver no less.

A qualified reputable technician may actually save you money in the long run. Ask friends and family for referrals, or call a local appliance parts store in your area.

  14. make sure that the temp. setting is very low. :)

  15. Check the settings?

    Buy a new fridge?

  16. did the door fall off?

  17. get a new fridge its that freaking simple

  18. have you cleaned under and behind?    if that dont fix it  check your setting , and buy a new fridge

  19. you dont have it turned up high enough>> check the settings

  20. If you have had the fridge for a long time it could be that the coolant which is used to circulate across the system is out or running very low. You many have a gage in the back of your refrigerator that can give you a reading. Also try to check and see if there is a coolant tank or a place to insert coolant on the back?
