Question:

My fridge drips water inside the fridge compartment, what can I do?

Actually is is more like a steady stream for short periods of time. I have to keep a container in there to catch the water. I assume it is leaking when the auto defroster is working. It is a Roper brand, and there are two sort of rectangular openings in the ceiling of the fridge compartment toward the back. One leaks regularly and abundantly, the other seems to occasionally drip. Is there anything I can do about this?

  1. Your refridgerator drain line is stopped up. Debris

ice daming, or debris can cause this. If you own the

fridge yes if you don't tell your landlord. Have

maintenance take care of this. Reason there are

delicate electrical switches that can be broken

if they are not handled with care.  Okay

if you own the fridge.   Turn off the power.

Place spoilable items in an ice chest  or

in plastic liner bags in the tub banked in ice bags.

The cost of ice will more than offset the expensive

food that can spoil.  Okay  owners. Unplug unit.

use flashlights only no drop lights.  remove the

bottom plastic cleanup panel. this will have ports

so air can flow from freezer to fridge.  You should

see blockage here normally ice. Use warm water

and defrost the ice blockage at the rear of the unit

you should find a clear or white plastic tube. This is the

condensate drainage line. When the unit defrosts

it will melt the ice in the back and bottom of the unit

exposing this drain take a small piece of hosing 3/8"

inside diameter install a tapered barbed fitting

on the end. Place the tube in your mouth with the

barbed end in the drain tube at the back blow hard

if there is resistance to any flow. I used to use an

air can made to refill tires for this purpose. You should

hear a whooshing sound if the line is clear and a

small flow of water out of the condensate pan

installed behind that little plate about 4" wide that

covers the kick plate area at the floor in the front of the fridge. Hear  a whoosh then the lines not plugged.

thats a good sound , no whoosh its plugged.

Air will dislodge the plug most of the time if this doesn't

do it place a bowl in the microwave and heat water

inside it. use a ladle or a turkey baster to deliver it

to the drain area in the back of the freezer. Let it

sit for 5 minutes and try the air again.  If all is well

make sure the condensate drain pan under the fridge

is dumped and cleaned. This could be a little gross

but once clean it works great. Put it all back together

turn the unit on 3 and place a ice tray in the freezer.

Check in 1-2 hours if ice is forming turn the freezer to

defrost if it drains it was the drain. If the defroster

doesn't cycle or melt its time to call a service person.

Installation is not the problem, parts availibility to the

lay repair person can be prohibitive. Generally one of

two things are wrong at this point. A microswitch,

or a thermostatic switch. The repairman can test

them and tell you if they are bad.  If the Prior

maintenance scenario is too much for you to handle

    call the repair man.

  2. Drain line is plugged from the freezer during the defrost cycle.

Drain line is located out the back to the drip pain or down the center of the refrig section.

Remove the food from the freezer section remove the  bottom section to expose the line, the drain has slim build up which can be cleaned with water down the drain.\ you may have to blow it out with a drinking straw to unclog.

  3. drain is clogged..... from the freezer when it defrost........

easy fix.... just do what 1 and 2 said

  4. Your drain is probably clogged up from the freezer to the drip pan under the refrigerator.  Normally they clog up with ice.  You can probably see this in the drain tube in the back of the refrigerator running from the freezer to the bottom.  An easy way to clean it out is to completely defrost the freezer.  This will melt all the ice including the ice in the tube.  For more troubleshooting information, see www.repairclinic.com.
