Can my friend and I buy a hamster from Petsmart without an adult? We are buying a big cage, food dish, water dish, toys healthy food,treats,litter/bedding.So we have alll the needs of a happy hammy! And how do you train hammys to go poddy in a certain area?

  1. PetSmart policy dictates that no one under the age of 18 can purchase a pet without a parent or guardian.

This might be different from state to state, but in Texas you have to be an adult to be legally responsible for an animal.

If both of your parents are telling you that you can not buy one, why are you wanting to do it anyways? Where will you keep it? How will you feed it? How will you pay for it's expensive vet care? What will you do when you need an adult to help you with it?

Getting a pet when your parents say no is really stupid.

  2. Of course you can buy a hamster without an adult, as long as you're not too young. If you're 12+ you should be fine.

My friend's brother recently bought a snake of some sort and he's only 12 or 13. =]

And you can't really train hamsters... they're not the brightest creatures, lol.

  3. No you cannot, and for good reason. Someone under the age of 16 will not be able to provide good care for an animal without a parent. What is your source of income, how are you going to constantly afford food as well as bedding, chew sticks, vitamins, cage mulch, ETC ETC... also if your parents won't let you keep it, where will you hide it? An animal isn't an item you can just hide, a hamster for instance is a nocturnal animal, just hiding it in a closet will confuse the h**l out of it, and it wouldn't know when to sleep, wake, excercise, ETC... also a stressed hamster can stop eating and just starve to death... If the hamster becomes sick how are you going to afford to take it to a vet? If your parents find out (which they probably will eventually) whats going to happen to the hamster? Will they just throw it outside die? You guys definitely seem to want one, and you seem to be looking out to buy the basic care items, I really think you guys should do a little more research on the animal, and after you think you know everything explain to your parents that you know what your doing, and you can take care of it. Your going to need your parents for financial back up, and anything goes wrong you'll need them... It's not great to hide stupid things like a hamster from your parents either... Just a FYI although im not encouraging it if you guys are over the age of 14 (i would hope so)most small pet shops wont really mind you buying from them underage... I've bought many animals from small petshops when I was 13-15, i'm 16 now and most places, except the occasional employee at petco, will allow me to buy animals.

Also a hamster cannot be trained to go to the bathroom ,hamsters are very clean animals however, and for the most part they will do their business in the same spot, however this spot will not be of your choosing...

  4. I bought one and im 15.  so i see no reason that you guys couldnt.  Hamsters pick a certain corner on their own to use the bathroom on their own, or at least mine do.  buy one of those cool hamster potties at petsmart and see if they use it.
