here's the story:

my friend was supposed to drive his mom to the airport today,

but he didn't have insurance on his car, so his mom told him she would get insurance for his car before they went. OK, then he drove her there and dropped her off, then he got pull over on the way home. The cop asked for his insurance card, he looked all over his car and couldn't find it. He told the cop his mom has it somewhere, so the cop said he supposed to give him like 5 days to fax him a copy of his insurance card, but he was going on a vacation day after tomorow, so my friend has to fax it to him before that.

My friend kept wondering why he got pull over because he didn't do nothing wrong. He asked the cop for like 3 times but he wouldn't tell him what he did wrong. He thought normally you don't supposed to get pull over(or like they are not allow to pull you over) if you don't do nothing wrong?? the cop only told him that he was on a run so he's not gonna fine my friend today.

  1. that's correct police cant pull you over w/o a reason and have to tell you why they did if they do pull you over.  not because of profiling or age or whatever.   ive  been pulled over because it was late and they wanted to know why i was out.  that was bs.  i can be out anytime i want.  the police were bored i guess cause it was a small town.  they really abused their authority in that town.

  2. "He thought normally you don't supposed to get pull over(or like they are not allow to pull you over) if you don't do nothing wrong??"

In theory this is correct however, just because he doesn't know what he did wrong doesn't mean that he did nothing wrong.

Also, we can stop anybody if we have a valid reason to do so. You may not know what it is and sometimes we can't tell you but usually we can. When I was 17  I was returning from a movie with my girlfriend when 2 cops pulled us over and pulled us out of the car at gunpoint. They checked us out and  realized we weren't the people they were looking for. They explained that a store was robbed 5 minutes ago, 2 miles from where they stopped me. They were looking for 2 people in a car that was the same make, model, and color and travelling in the same general direction. This is what we call being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I stopped a car a few days ago because I knew its owner's driver license was suspended and the driver looked a lot like the owner. This is what we call "probable cause". When we determined that the driver had a proper license he was sent on his way.

Your friend could have been stopped for any number of valid reasons.

  3. Sounds like the cop was just looking for something. They can pull you over for anything!! Say they are looking for someone that meets your friends description. They can pull him over just to verify his identity.

Just be glad your friend did not get a fine. There is a new law that says if you dont have your license, proof of insurance, and registration. You can be fined 175 dollars.

And tell your friend to make sure he has EVERYTHING BEFORE he goes anywhere!!

Ok I just read the additional details. YES that cop can tell that he DIDN"T have insurance. There is a time stamp on the insurance policy....

BUT if he didn't give him a warning card, he was probably just being a jerk...And if he didn't give a warning card. HE CAN NOT fine your friend!. Your friend would have had to sign something saying he knows he was being fined or that he received a warning card.

So tell him not worry. HE CAN fight ANYTHING he would receive...And win. Cause he never signed anything. He could deny being pulled over at all... The cop has no proof he pulled your friend over without a signature card...   :)

  4. Why is it always a "friend."

    Just own up!

You got lucky, just fax it over with a nice letter.

  5. Cops can and do whatever the h**l they want. Most of them anyway not all but most. Some states let you get the insurance after the fact. If I were your friend I would just go get the insurance and then fax it just to be on the safe side. It seems as though your friend should have still gotten some sort of a citation. still get the insurance and fax it you dont want to mess with no cops. Tell your friend to send a letter explaining what happened and why he just got the insurance.
