How many letters/numbers are there normally on a TB tat. And is it possible to get info without paying a fee? (Just trying to squeeze as many pennies as I can) Don't have any paperwork on this mare, except that she's about 7 years old and a real looker.

  1. If it your friend, why are you tiring to save money. I do not know who keep the books, it is ether the American jockey association, or the American Horse racing association, and all racing horses are in it. If somebody has to search records, you will have to pay a fee.

  2. I assume you are in the USA, get in touch with the jockey club and they can get you the info that you need.

  3. Sounds like she has been freeze marked.  Contact the Farmkeys freeze marking company.  They should be able to tell you where she came from.  I am a bit wary that she has no paperwork.  It is illegal for a horse to be sold without a passport, or even moved between yards.

  4. The letter will indicate the year of birth.  A is 1997, so she's actually 11 years old, or the letter is not an A.  The number can be matched to a horse by the Jockey Club if she gives them a call 1-800-333-1778, but they are 5 digit numbers, so she's missing one, they likely can not look it up with an incomplete #, although you never know, they may be able to pul up a list of partial matches.  I believe they do charge to look up a horse, though I don't know how much.  http://www.equinerescue.info/tattoos.txt

  5. You might want to contact the Jockey Club and see if you can trace the tattoo.
