My friend has gone AWOL (For the second time) once in 2005 for about ten days and now he's gone AWOL again for about eight days if he decides to turn himself in now, who should he contact and what should he expect when he gets back to base.(realistically speaking) is there someone he can talk to or something he can do to get him discharged from the military for good I really want to help him but I don't know how I don't want to turn my back on my friend when he needs me the most.

  1. REDICULOUS! People who desert don't work at McDonalds th rest of their life. If you believe that you are some kind of backwoods simpleton.

He will more than likely get an other than honerable discharge and get on with his life. He may have a more difficult time finding a job he wants but he will be able to find one assuming he is qualified.

Since the start of the conflict in Iraq 40,000 service members from all branches of the military have deserted. None of them have been sentenced to more than 18 months.

  2. If it's less than 30 days, he will most likely get booted out under the "administrative" discharge.  It's not bad, but it's not good either.  He will serve his punishment for being absent first though, at the most 60 days of "restricted" duty.  He has done it before, so he should know what that's all about.

And don't see a lawyer, like the answer above me.  It's only been 8 days.  He won't be going to court martial (the only time a lawyer is allowed to be present).  Everything will be handled internally in NJP.

  3. if he stays awol for 30 days or more, he is pretty much running the rest of his life, ensure he knows this....for this will ruin his life...also, if he wants to get discharged, all he has to say is the truth...i dont want to be here for whatever reason...also tell him to stop wasting tax payers money, i have absolutely zero respect for your friend, I hope they fry him and put him in the brig.  Thanks for trying to help him though, hes s******g himself, make sure he doesnt bring you down with him

  4. he will get discharged most likely if this is the second time, dishonorably discharged. he may have to do some time in military prison. but he should go back and face it now get it out of the way

  5. If he left the base on his own ticket he should be able to get back there on his own ticket also.   Then he just turns himself into his commander and his commander will get him out for good.

General discharge for sure since this is his second AWOL.   If he missed a deployment and left a hole in his unit,  he will get it under other than honorable conditions.

Your friend will then get to work at fast food places for the rest of his life.

Since this is his second AWOL it is too late to "help him out" as he has screwed the pooch.  They gave him a second chance and he blew it.

I suggest he move to Canada.

  6. Have him turn himself in to the local police and tell them he is AWOL. They'll take it for there. As far as a discharge, he may get one after some time in the stockade but hey, I'd rather they make him finish up his hitch at hard labor. Am I the only one who thinks he is a coward.

  7. He should contact a lawyer immediately. Tell him to check around the town his base is in and he will find someone. They can give him legal advice on what to do. It is very difficult to get out of the military early. You can only really do it for a medical discharge or a hardship discharge. Any other way is extremely difficult and those 2 are hard enough.
