  1. There are definitely things to do in and around the area. If you like modern art, you will love the Sprengel Museum -- German expressionism and French modern. Although the city was 90% destroyed in WWII, there still are some historical sites left to see, including the Leine Palace and the old and new city halls (city hall in English is Rathaus ... don't get confused it could be something else. Rat in German is "counsel"). There also is a healthy student life here so plenty of cafes and cool little shops to discover.

If you have a car and want to go for a day trip, head north to the Lüneburger Heide. There are two places here very much worth visiting:

    1. The former concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, where Anne Frank and many others perished. There is a museum there and fields of mass graves; the camp itself was burned down after being liberated by British troops as a disease-control measure.

    2. Celle, a lovely small city that was not damaged much during the war. Half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries abound and the centre is almost all closed off to cars.

Celle is about 40 minutes away from Hannover. Don't drive if there is "messe" (a trade fair -- that almost always causes gridlock).

If you don't have a car, there are good train connections between Hannover and Celle as well. There is bus service between Celle and Bergen Belsen but it's pretty slow going ... see the links below.

I remember there being a bad part of Hannover but I forget its name ... anyway, your friend will clue you in I'm sure.

    Have fun!

  2. You will probably will want to stay once you get here

  3. Absolutely.  I spent sometime in Hannover.  If you like architecture and old buildings you can tour the city looking at the town hall and churches.  I believe there was even a tour you could take of all the major sites by following a red line, although this line may be gone now.  If you like theater you could definitely take in a show of a play/opera/concert- although if you don't speak German it may be a little difficult for you to find one in English.  There are movie theaters there that on certain nights show English movies.  There may be all sorts of things going on in town like the market or sometimes a little fair.

If Hanover isn't enough for you other German cities like Hamburg and Bremen are just a train ride away.  Hamburg if I remember correctly shows movies on the side of a building on weekends during the summer and has a famous fischmarkt, where they sell more than fish.  Bremen is a lovely town featured in the Grimm's Fairytale: The Bremen Town Musicians.

To sum it up, there is tons to do- all you have to do is look and I am sure your friend will help you track things down!
