The problem is since he has been in jail for the last 12 yrs, i dont know what he would include, since he has spent his entire adult life in jail. (he went in when he was 18). I know he is trying to get his life together, but its hard to do without a job. what is the best way to address this situation and to show that he has a lot potential. he is a very hard worker and really wants to do good. he just really needs a job. please help me set him up in the right direction.

  1. He's gotta tell the truth.  12 years?  Who did he murder?  I was sold on an ex-con once when I was told that he would be a better risk than the average employee off the street because he is subject to constant supervision and drug testing from his parole officer.  He worked OK for a couple of years, but we had to let him go for absenteeism. (He had to come a long way to work.)

  2. I used this resume writing service in my area, this is the email address, (resume.help50@yahoo.com) you should try them, it only cost me $35.00 and I got a great job from this new resume, I never thought about the format that they use but the turn around time was less then 24 hrs.  I would have to say it was the best service I have ever used and it was worth every dime.  Also they let me pay through paypal.

  3. He obviously will have to give an account for where he was for twelve years.  He will also be limited in who will hire him.  However, he should slant his resume to highlight his skills and qualifications, not the companies he's worked for.

For example, if he learned a skill in jail, like welding, he could list the projects he worked on and the outcome rather than where he did it.  He might also consider volunteering somewhere to build a work history.  (He's not getting paid now anyway.)  The name of the job game is networking; hanging around and getting to know people who do whatever it is he wants to do.

Some homeless shelters have job programs where a person can get some experience and meet some people.

Good luck and congratulations on trying to in the right direction.

  4. simple -- have his get a job where a resume is not necessary -- bus boy -- dish washer and just hope he works his buns off -- right not he needs a good work record for a year or so at any job to off set the other!!!!
