it would not be fair because obviously the

  1. he's wrong. the 3 egyptian god cards can't be used in tournaments (because they don't have specific effects written in the text). the sacred beasts are unlimited

  2. Your friend must have been getting his information from "Imadeitup.com."

No, The God Cards are banned in tournaments, but they may still be used in free play if you can agree on their effects, which happen to be listed here:

    The Winged Dragon of Ra

    Divine

    Level 10

    Divine-Beast / Effect

    ATK: ? / DEF: ?

Effect: You must offer 3 monsters to tribute summon this card. The ATK and DEF of this card becomes the sum of the respective ATK and DEF values of the tributed monsters. When this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the graveyard during the end phase. While this card is face-up on the field, it cannot be targeted by the effects of spell, trap and monster effects that designate a target. When this card is successfully special summoned, you can activate 1 of the following effects:

    - Pay 1000 Life points to destroy 1 monster on the field and remove it from play

    - Pay any amount of life points, this card gains ATK and DEF equal to the amount paid.

    Slifer the Sky Dragon

    Divine

    Level 10

    Divine-Beast / Effect

    ATK: X000 / DEF: X000

Effect: You must offer 3 monsters to tribute summon this card. When this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the graveyard during the end phase. While this card is face-up on the field, it cannot be targeted by the effects of spell, trap and monster effects that designate a target. The ATK and DEF of this card are equal to number of cards in your hand x1000. When your opponent summons a monster(s), that monster loses 2000 ATK of DEF. If the monster(s) ATK or DEF reaches 0 by this effect, destroy the monster(s).

    Obelisk the Tormento

    Divine

    Level 10

    Divine-Beast / Effect

    ATK: 4000 / DEF: 4000

Effect: You must tribute 3 monsters to tribute summon this card. When this card is Special Summoned, it is sent to the graveyard during the end phase. While this card is face-up on the field, it cannot be targeted by the effects of spell, trap and monster effects that designate a target. Once per turn, you can tribute 2 other monsters on your field to destroy all monsters your opponent controls and inflict 4000 damage to their life points.

The Sacred Beasts on the otherhand, can be used in tournemants and in 3s if you like.
