  1. If he acts now and admits what he did, charges may not be pursued.  If he waits around and does nothing he will get caught and he will get prosecuted for this.  Tell him to call all parties involved and explain to them the huge mistake he's made and the remorse he feels.  ACT NOW!  Don't wait around.

  2. Really the only thing he can do is to find a way to deposit the missing money into the person's checking account.  In order to do that he would have to have the account information (which if he has ANY sense at all he wrote down from the front of their check).  Then its easy, get a blank deposit slip, fill out the info, deposit the money and no harm done.

However, if the person is the type to check their balances and activities on a regular basis they will either see a chunk of money gone before his new deposit goes through, or they will see the withdrawal and deposit and know exactly what happened.  If they do not know the identity of your friend they can call the police and the police WILL review bank tapes of your friend depositing the money.   There is no annonymous way to fix this situation.  The best he can do is deposit it quickly and hope they don't pay very good attention to their account activity.
