  1. First she would need to go to a 4 year university to earn a Bachelor of Science degree.  She could do a zoology or pre-veterinary medicine major or something else closely related.  Once getting her B.S. and getting a certain number of hands on experience hours, she could then apply to vet school which she would attend for an additional four years.  I suggest UC Davis..an excellent vet school, but VERY competitive to get into.  For undergrad..she might try Cal Poly Pomona, or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

  2. Usually someone studying to be a vet will take an undergraduate course in biology or zoology (about four years) and then a course at a school of veterinary medicine (which I believe is also four years).

As for schools, I can't recommend a specific one in California (though if she wants to come to Florida the University of Central Florida has a great biology department), but any school with a good program in biology will be appropriate.  Schools that tend to focus more on sciences than liberal arts are generally the ones to look into.  Liberal arts colleges can have good science departments, but it's not necessarily a focus of the school the way it will be in the former type.  Talk to some of the upperclassmen in the department at any schools you look into, as they'll be the best judge of the current situation.  Talk to professors as well; find out if they seem helpful (ask the students about that too).

And one tip for her: tell her to relax and enjoy the classes along the way :P.  In my opinion (speaking from the outside, my focus was ecology rather than pre-med or -vet, but I was in class with a lot of them) it's just as important to enjoy the classes as it is to get good grades in them; take some interesting electives in the department.  It's better to have some fun than to be totally stressed out the whole time, and enjoying what you're doing makes it easier to get those grades.
