My friend wants to know: How much, approximately, would it cost to care for a 15 hand mare?

She has her own stable.

This would include food, and vet bills, assuming the horse is healthy.

Just approximately, guess!

She lives in Maine, near Bangor, if that helps.

  1. Anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand. Keep in mind that the cost includes food, vet, blacksmith, dentist, etc. Make sure that your friend has years of horse experience and is getting a horse that is her level. (Example if she's a beginner make sure she doesn't get an intermediate or advanced horse thinking it will make her "better" at riding.) If she doesn't, she shouldn't buy a horse.

  2. My "friend" would like to know how knowing it's a 15hh mare is going to help any of us answer your question.

Tell your friend depending on vet charges, the health of the horse, how much hay and feed cost's up there it could run any where from $4,000 up a year.

Perhaps your friend should get on the internet and do her own research as other responsible horse people do before purchasing. A horse is going to be her responsibility so how is she going to learn and  be responsible if she's sending other people to do her dirty work?

  3. well u would most likely pay a month for feed and every thing else around 2000 dollars plus the horse is prabably around 5,000 to 8,000 dollars

  4. It would probably cost between $1000-$1400/year.  Depending on what she plans on using the mare for, her breed and how healthy she is.  If she is an easy keeper[doesn't need shoes, much grain or hay] it will probably be closer to $1000 a year but if she needs shoes every 6-8 weeks, gets more than half a scoop of grain a day, and needs more than a flake of hay a day... it will probably be closer to $1400/year.  It is about $120-$150 to have their shots/coggins test done yearly.  It also depends on her age, joint condition etc.  If she needs special grain or supplements that adds to the cost as well.

That link has some details on prices and things you'll need to care for your own horse.

I Hope She Finds A Great One!!!

  5. well is she at a boarding facility because it cost me about 1000 per horse when i was at one. But if she is at a barn at her house or something i would say around 450 a month since thats about how much it costs me now that my horses are at my barn.
