Question:

My friend wants to rap at his grandmother's funeral?

He has this whole rap written about her. It reminds me of that song about Biggie Smalls "Missing You." It's going to be so embarrassing for him and his family is going to freak out. A lot of them are old. How can I get him to nix this idea.

  1. Tell your friend that he should let everyone know what he is going to do at the funeral right before he raps. Tell him to say that he know that this may feel inappropriate at the time but he wants to show his grievance in this way. Tell him to say that it makes him feel good that he is doing that for his grandmother.

As long as he communicates with his family, there shouldn't be anyone wanting to oppose him. They should let everyone grieve in anyway that they feel would be good for them...

  2. Perhaps he could recite it as poetry or a speech to be more fitting in this sombre occasion.

  3. Tell him he needs to talk to his family about it.  There is nothing wrong with rapping at a funeral if those who matter are ok with it.  Funerals don't have to be traditional, and even old people can surprise you sometimes.  Today people usually consider a funeral to be a celebration of life, so if he goes about it the right way it just may be fine.  My husband's "funeral" (we didn't call it a funeral) was a bit unorthodox.  So he needs to talk to the family.

  4. Have you tried to explain to him that rap is not really a style appropriate for an old woman's funeral?

  5. He is grieving in his own way.  He does not feel he will be embarrassed, so why are you embarrassed?  Support him, that's what he needs right now, not you telling him what he is doing to make himself feel better is a bad idea.  People write bad songs and poetry all the time to be read at a funeral or wake, he's just doing it in a different form.

  6. aahhh!! embarrassing!! but maybe it will lighten up the funeral and make it not so depresing!?!? anywayz some old people like that kinda thing!! hope i helped ya!! :D

  7. Just tell him a funeral is not the best time rap and tell him to save his talent for another occasion.

    Hope that helps.
