My friends 2000 manul jetta wont go into third gear sometimes?

okay when shell be driving she can go into third gear, but sometimes...she just cant. she says its like there is a wall just blocking her, so there is no way to get into it, and the car will make a weird sound....whats wrong with it?

Could be shifter cables binding or bad synchro....
