  1. No, not free at all. Sometimes the bereavement fares end up being more expensive than deals she might be able to get if she looks around.

I am  not sure if Southwest flies out of Tampa, but they do fly out of Orlando and they usually have the best fares.

  2. Not such a thing as free bereavement fares.  Airlines used to give about a 50% discount but those days are long gone.  Just check on the least expensive airlines such as Southwest and those are the fares that have to be paid.

  3. You already have good answers (no, it's not free)--however, I don't think that applies to you, (discount, that is), because your friend's mother is not a blood relative.

It's usually parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, children or immediate family only. Do check with the airline when you book the ticket.

You will need to present copy of death cert. or some papers re: the funeral. So be prepared.

  4. Bereavement fares really aren't worth it anymore. Check Southwest or another low-cost carrier for a cheap flight and it will almost certainly be cheaper than the bereavement fare that a big airline will offer you. Bereavement fares are discounted from the full fare, if you can find a non-refundable cheap fare somewhere out there, you will save a LOT more money. Plus airlines require lots of proof that you are, in fact, traveling to attend funeral services.

I am sorry for your loss.

  6. The bereavement fare is not free at all.

It is just a relaxation of the advance purchase

requirements, hence a reduction from the

full fare which you would otherwise have to

pay for a reservation on short notice.

You need to have proof of the circumstances,

    such as a death certificate.
