my old friends are coming to visit over night. One of them wants to go out and the other doesn't have a lot of money. I said I'd probably make lunch and I could probably do it for not that much money but I'm a broke college student with out a job. Also my friend that's broke I've bought dinner for three times. And she gets money every month from her father. I don't get money from anyone.

Going out would def be cheaper for me. And if I cook I'm also going to end up feeding my roommate. She's broke too so if we went out she prob wouldn't come with us. So i'd be cooking for 4. I have some food around but just like snacks, cereal, chips, some turkey and rice.

Also to make lunch I'd have to get up early, borrow my friends car which means walking like 10 blocks in 90 degree weather drive to the store and drop her car off.

I don't want to be rude to my broke friends, but it's not like I have much more money than them. What should I do?!

  1. first of all you hsould get a job. college and no income is not a good thing. and then, just tell them. you dont have much money. so you can't pay for everything and everyone. and its not being rude it's just doing the right thing for you. and looking out for you because i dont think anyone else is going to.

  2. Get a box labeled from the local foodbank and fix something from it.

They should get the message...I hope that you did.

    I'm serious.

  3. Honesty is always the best policy...if you knew that money was going to be this tight is honestly should have been discussed before the visit was planned.  Everyone knows how it goes being broke in college but it appears that at least one of these friends you've treated to dinner three times before.  I say you need to find a simple turkey and rice recipe and kick it that way.  Let them know the situation up front when they get there in case everyone wants to "pool" funds together and do something else.  Honesty is always the best policy and this way everyone can help "decide" what to do...it isn't distasteful or rude.....it's giving them a choice.  You already are a good friend and gracious host...don't stress so much!!!

    Peace & Love :)

  4. Can't you do a lasagna.. in a casserole..  the ingredients for that are cheap.. and yes you would have to go shopping but you can get a lot and it is filling and that would be an inexpensive meal.. If they are good friends. I would definitely feed them..  and if they have no money and all of you go out for a meal it will be a lot more expensive...

  5. I remember those days. Now is the time to try to be creative. I'm pretty sure your friends would understand if you're struggling. Why don't you just make turkey, rice, & canned veggies & divide it between the 4 of you?

  6. just cook spaghetti noodles 1.00 sauce 2.00

    3.00 for four

  7. try frozen dinners

  8. I agree with latj.  But another cheap idea - loaf of bread, use that turkey, get maybe one more pack of cold cuts, serve all the chips you've got. Or you could buy a couple of cans of chili.   Lunch doesn't have to be fantabulous, it's just a meal.

When I was in college it was pretty standard to go dutch on everything, but these are friends from out of town so you should be able to have a few basics around to feed everyone if they are staying with you.

  9. No, make them tea and some cakes.

  10. So let them come! Just explain to them your situation, not that you're being rude or anything. Come lunchtime, ask them what they feel like doing--- pitch in and cook together or eat out. Don't feel like you need to be the ultimate hostess, it's alright. Make do with what you have. You don't need to spend every penny. It's all about the good times...

Hope you get employed soon. It's tough being self-reliant.
