  1. Get a really good vet, and give her lots of love because she will probably get very bored.

  2. The horse,With it being the leg and all, must be in great pain if it is bad enough I am begging to put her down. She is probably in great pain.I am not trying to be rude but I have a tru soft spot for animals.

  3. Talk to your vet.  A lot of it depends on where the fracture is.  Most important is immobility.  Wrap the leg to keep flexion of the joint to a minimum and confine to stall rest, with walks.

Again, talk to your vet for the best actions to take.

  4. if the ligament is injured aswell the horse will probably always be a bit tender on that side, if it's just the bone give it heaps of times box rest and limited paddock time away from other horses so she doesn't get hurt or start playing

  5. have the vet x-ray it and give a prognosis.  I helped care & treat a horse who had broken the bone inside the hoof & cracked the hoof at the coronet band.  we kept him in a stall for 2 months [cleaning it 2x daily] with special egg shoe, then moved him to a small paddock [20x30] for the next 2 months.  X-rays showed good healing & the hoof was regrowing nicely so we started slowly exercising him for the next 2-3 months.  He worked fine on a lunge [no limping or soreness] so we tried to ride him after 6 months.  He'd limp at the trot or canter.  We quit and put him in a 20 acre pasture for 6 months.  After that, we pulled him back out and he never showed lameness again - becoming a show horse & competing nicely.

  6. she can make sure that the horse does not try to over work and not move too much.  It depends on the fracture but it should heal pretty good if she has a good vet that can check on the horse regularly.  She can also give the mare lots of attention as she is probly going to be bored a little bit.   I hoped this helped a little!!!

  7. Stall rest and x-rays to see the progression and diagnosis.

  8. Call the vet! The vet will know what to do, wether she will have to get a cast or she will just be on rest. After contacting the vet, I would try and comfort her and and give her some nice treats every once in awhile. If it is sweeling I would suggest rinising it with cold water to help supress the swelling. First thing to do is call the vet though, for it could be serious.

    Good luck,

    HJB

  9. I'm assuming xrays have already been done to arrive at the diagnosis.  I am sure the vet has advised on the appropriate accommodations, activity level, and dietary changes while the horse is recovering.  If the diagnosis has not been validated by xray exam, then it should be and the veterinarian will do the advising.

EDIT: cowgirl...if you fractured your patella (similar to a sesamoid in a horse) would you rather be euthanized or be managed with pain medication?
