She has a plasid 10 year old tb. he did race but hasnt for a while.

Last week a shoe was loose and they couldnt get in touch with the farrier, so the horse wouldnt canter. They finally did and now his hoof is fine., but when she tried to canter him today, (she was at her dads hous ethe hole week) he bolted, then bucked and then reared. No 1 would expect this at all from this horse. he is so quite

what went wrong??

  1. out of shape from not being ridden?

how about a sore under his saddle?

maybe the shoe was reset wrong, or his foot was hurting him. when my horse's foot got messed up by the farrier, he was practically insane for weeks. he bolted, jumped, bucked, ran, he was crazy. the nail was set into his foot too far... this farrier didn't know what he was doing, and totally destroyed his feet.

  2. Bad shoeing or damage to the hoof from loose shoe?

  3. If there was something wrong with his feet I would expect severe lameness, not refusal to canter, he was either being lazy or the aids for him were not clear.  Loose shoes will not necessary stop a horse from going forward, unless of course he catches them on something and trips up.

Having his shoes replaced will not cause him to bolt, buck or rear.  He might have been feeling full of the joys of spring or he might be in pain from his mouth or back and these are totally separate issues requiring a saddler, a vet or a riding instructor!
