  1. gas furnace? turn the thermostat down


  2. If you mean the pilot light, look at the gas valve (the gas pipe will run right into it).  It should have a 3-position k**b that says: ON - PILOT - OFF.  Turn it to pilot.

    Note that most newer furnaces do not have a pilot light. The gas valve will just say ON - OFF.
