hi,

i am planning on moving to Montreal after i graduate next year from manitoba. i will have a Bsc in Microbiology. i have no connection to anyone living there so im a bit scared of my decision of moving out alone. i am learning some french these days but am not really good at it.

do any of you think i will be able to get a job in a professional field (like a microbiology lab) shortly after i move there even if i dont know much french?

ill am also on a very strict budget so CANT afford to visit there before i make the move permanently. i really wish i could just visit and see if ill like it but i really need to save money for the big move (plus ive heard tons of good things abt montreal!!) does this seem like a stupid thing to do?

also, what areas of the city are good for a newcomer to find a cheap apartment with access to public transportation?

thanks in advance everyone

  1. Buying a home or renting is not too expensive there, however, finding a job will be TOUGH!!  I'm not kidding, because I have family there and without speaking fluent French and being able to write it properly, you will not stand a chance.  Let me put it to you this way, you can speak NO english and get a job no problem, but if you speak english but hav no french, you will not get a job, and I can assure you of that, because even the lowest level roles require that you can speak to the public, so if you lack French, you will not be able to work at all.

Why not consider Ontario??  Money is good and it is not far at all from Montreal, you can make trips there for fun, when you want to....think abot Toronto, good jobs, future prospects, etc!!

    Bonne chance!!

  2. its not very expensive to live here

  3. To AKM, it is not entirely true, you can have a very good job in Montreal and Laval even if you don't speak French. I know many people working in pharmaceutical labs and none of them speak French...

  4. I know a lot of people in Montreal who don't speak French and have great jobs, especially in the field of science. Having said this, making the effort to learn some French won't hurt you at all...

Montreal is a great city, and you can have a wonderful time here. I would suggest getting roomates at first since it will be an easy way to both save money and meet new people. The public transit system is very good in Montreal.

    Good luck!
