Question:

My future in-laws said they'd either buy us a bedroom set or just give us the cash. Which should we do?

We live in Maryland but are originally from Texas and will be traveling to TX for our wedding.

My Mother-in-law and my fiance's two Aunties have offered to either allow us to choose a bedroom suite (i believe that means bed, dressers, night stand, etc) OR they said we can just take the cash.

Fiance and I are torn. We just moved into a new house and only have living room furniture. In our bedroom all we have is a box spring and mattress that we sleep on.

But then, cash is so tempting because fiance is like we could buy a really cheap set and then keep the extra cash.

Opinions?

  1. go with ur fiance.

  2. First off, whether you choose the set or take the cash, don't get cheap bedroom furniture. You want it to last.  My parents got a bedroom set before they got married and it's still around - my sister is using it now.  You don't have to break the bank, but it's definitely worth it to get furniture that's solid wood construction with wood-on-wood drawer glides and wooden dresser backs.  It will last you years and you'll save more money in the long run.

I think as long as they're going to let you choose the set you want, I'd let them get that for you.  My grandparents have already promised us $5000 worth of furniture for our house, which if we shop smart could get us a nice bedroom set and possibly most of a dining room set.

  3. Are you going to be able to pick out the set? and are they going to pay for the shipping? or will you be getting it in TX? If the answers to those questions I would say no to the set and take the money, (use it wisely)

  4. I say it depends on your financial situation. If you have debt or need to pay bills, take the cash. If you are comfortable and a nice bedroom set is something you desire, do that.

  5. You should get a really nice set from your inlaws.  It will be something you can be proud of and you can pass it down to you children.  The cash will get spent and you will have nothing to show for it.  Also, a cheap set of furniture will never hold up and it will just look cheap.  Get something you can be proud of!!

  6. Bedroom set.  Get a nice one, it can last forever.

  7. Take the money, and then you'll be able to buy more than just the bedroom set.

  8. take the cash!! besides being able to save money, you won't have to listen to the input of the loving but annoying family members who think you should get a giant oak canopy bed

  9. go with the bedroom set. In a few years when you have all your furniture and your bed room set is still standing tall, and not crumbling because it's made from press board, you'll be glad you did this.

Get cheap little tables for the house and things that aren't that expensive to replace.

You'll be glad in the long run.

  10. Do you really want to create your marriage bedroom with a really cheap set? Or do you want your bedroom to be a lovely, inviting and attractive place to be?

I'd take the furniture and have my bedroom be a place we love.

  11. It's going to be up to you and your fiancee, but if it were up to me, I'd definately choose the bedroom set.  Why not have a nice bedroom set?  You're going to be getting lots of money from other people for your wedding as it is.  Sometimes it's easier to spend money on insignificant things rather than putting it towards nice stuff. :)

  12. Your guy is on the track I'd choose.  Get crates for the bedroom and put the money in an IRA.
