My garage door like the motor works, but when you press it while its on the ground it acts like it is going to go up but then just stops (moves maybe 1 cm).

Then if you pull it all the way up and press the button it will close.

How do I fix this problem?

I can manually open and close it still, but I am trying to get it so it can do it automatically.

  1. You need to adjust the open force.  What kind of model is the opener, post and I can tell you were to find it.  (If it is a lift-master, chamberlain, or craftsmen I need to know what color the button to program remotes is.) The force just needs to be adjusted every once in a while.  This is actually a good thing, it extends the life of the powerhead.

If you can lift it by hand the spring is not broken and the cables are still on track.

  2. Really need to know make and model? And when you pull it up are you helping the motor or is the door disconnected from the opener?  Try lifting the door from close with it disconnected.  Try this only closed cause a door spring might be broken and if you disconnect the door while it is open bad things are going to happen.

  3. Go to the unit.  somewhre on it it has a force adjustment for up and down...give it more force to raise
