My garage is really hot in the summer. Has any one put in an exhaust fan to vent the hot air?

  1. what style of house is it, is the garage under the living area? if not, (if your garage sits on the side of your house), and your garage has it's own roof; you can have a ridge vent cut into the peak of the roof to vent the garage. a roofer can do this fairly inexpensively for you, if there aren't any soffit vents under the roof over hang on the garage, he may have to cut some in (for air intake). the hot air in the garage will rise, and flow out the ridge vent, in so doing draw fresh (cooler) air in thru the soffit vents, keeping the temp inside the garage about the same as the outside temp. good luck, i know this will fix your problem, without raising your electric bill by running a fan.

  2. Nothing really special needs to be done except weather-proofing the fan.  A louvered venting grate on the outside would do that.  Include a sreen in the opening also, to keep bugs out.

  3. Normally when built there is no attic insulation over the garage, and depending on the builder, none in the walls,(garages are not considered heated space) if there is access to the attic it would be well worth your money to have it insulated. An attic vent would also help as long as there are vents in the overhang. It must have openings to pull outside air up through to replace the hot air. There are also ridge vents that work well.

  4. Is there a window in the garage.  A fan can be placed there.

I did in a detached garage.

If your's is attached, you may have to cut an opening and frame it in, then weather seal around the fan.
