Admittedly it's a fiat.Motorhome on a ducato chassis.1992.It still seems very excessive.Do they have to take the whole engine to pieces or something? They say the box is not damaged and the problem is internal.Fiat ducato is not rare and I should think a used or reconditioned one could be obtained.Where though?Scrapyards?I haven't much time to go touring round.

  1. 5000 sounds a bit much , but then its hard to guesstimate without knowing the exact problems with the box.

For example if there was a massive failure due to overloading and a shaft broke ,,and while doing so it cracked the case , then Yeah , I guess it could be big money.

On the other hand , replacing a couple of synchro's is a relatively minor job that should cost significantly less.

The high price may just be the shop trying to cover itself in case there is a lot of work that is unseen at this time.

Take it to a dealer for a second quote.

  2. 800, QUID SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT, they will just have to replace the cogs, which needs a lot of skill, and they sound like they have none , they have gone for the subcontract option, they tell ducato to rebuild it for 3 grand and they have gone a grand each, walk away and don't mention it to any mechanic you visit, they will use the price as a guide to charge you, try somebody out of the auto mart who repair gear boxes,
